Shri Malbinder Singh, MT Driver of 422 RMPL/87 RCC (P) Swastik was deployed on Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg (JN Marg) at dett MS-18. On 26 Jun, 2003 after returning from day’s work at around 17:00 hrs, he was informed about the road block and active slides at 2 places between 21Km and 23Km on JN Road. By that time all the CPLs had gone to their camp after the day’s routine work. It was raining heavily and the visibility was poor due to fog. When the message of slide and stranded passenger including the Commander to reached the Camp, he willingly accepted to accompany the JCB operator for road clearance. The slide was active and rain continued. MT Driver Malbinder Singh without caring for his life, facing the brunt of inclement weather assisted JCB operator by keeping a watch on the movement of stones, boulders in the slide and of the JCB within the restricted area of operations. With the positive support of MT Driver Malbinder Singh the road could be cleared and all the stranded vehicles and passengers could be given safe passage.
When the clearance of slide was in the final stage after evacuating all stranded vehicles/passengers, there was a flash flood in the Nallah with boulders. It caught the JCB, its operator OEM Satheesan. N and MT Driver Malbinder Singh unaware and presumably swept them away into the steep valley downhill resulting in the instant death of the Operator and fatal injuries to MT Driver Malbinder Singh, who succumbed to injuries being evacuated to the Fd Amb at Kyangnoskla. MT Driver Malbinder Singh displayed exemplary devotion to duty by laying down his life in the highest traditions of the GREF for maintaining lines of communication in forward active field area, far beyond the call of duty. In recognition of his bravery and supreme sacrifice, he has been awarded “SHAURYA CHAKRA” on Republic Day 2004.
